Jackie O'Shea - Donoughmore, Co. Cork. Stalwart Supporter Of Local Sports Clubs

One Of Donoughmore's Greatest Community Volunteers

At Páirc Eoin Mhic Charthaigh, Donoughmore, Co. Cork, one of Ireland’s immense army of G.A.A. volunteers had a memorial erected to recognise his outstanding contributions to the gaelic athletic association and particularly, his beloved Donoughmore G.A.A. club.

Jackie O’Shea died unexpectedly on 20 th April 2011 and his sudden passing was mourned throughout the G.A.A. community of mid Cork.

In a period spanning over seventy years, this community volunteer was at the core of many local events as a willing worker at a multitude of tasks. His dedication was described as invaluable and incalculable and will probably never be equalled. Known far and wide as Mr. Donoughmore, he took his role as a community ambassador to trojan heights and excelled with great pride in promoting all associations in the area.

As a sportsman of excellence he was secretary of the Donoughmore Open Sports, an annual event that was enshrined in the athletics calendar of clubs all over Ireland. In hurling he wore the custodians jersey and was rated as one of the best keepers in the barony of Muskerry during his playing career.

In administration he took on many roles in his club as vice chairman, secretary, PRO, committee member, fundraiser, field booking officer and pride of place in his own heart was when he assumed the officership of life president of Donoughmore G.A..A. club.

He was instrumental in organising carnivals, concerts, dances, road races and much more, all to swell much needed income for the local club. Jackie O’Shea’s reign took in the period 1940’s through to 2011 and when local historians recall outstanding volunteers who stood out for their voluntary services, the name Jackie O’Shea will be preserved and illuminated in the annals of Donoughmore sporting circles.
