Jimmy Doyle of Tipperary: A Revelation To Watch In Action In His Prim

Only a few hurling forwards equate Jimmy Doyle for sheer modesty and hurling charisma. Christy Ring, Eddie Keher and Mick Mackey, are in everyones hall of fame. Jimmy Doyle is also right at the very top.The majority of hurling legends from bygone eras went out and played their natural attacking game and let the ball and hurley do the talking. Soloing was the privilige of the fearless and very skillful exponents of forward play in the Tipp man's era.

From 1954 to 1971, Jimmy contested thirteen All Ireland finals and won nine titles with the Premier county. He graced Croke Park in four minor finals and was recorded as the yougest player at 14 to appear in a minor All Ireland final, losing in 1954, when playing between the posts. Minor All Irelands were won in 1955/56/57, he captained the 1957 minor team.

Progression to Tipp's senior team was a natural elevation and in 1958 he won his first senior All Ireland medal when Galway fell 4 - 9 to 2 - 5.
Tipp had many great players in this era including John Doyle, Tony Wall, Liam Devaney, Theo English and many more. To make an impact in this company, it was essential to be endowed with rare hurling skills and Jimmy became an instant household name in such company when he paraded exceptional scoring skills that are part of gaelic games history. His greatest honour came in 1962 when he became captain of Tipp.
