1801 ......... The Union with Great Britain begins on the 1st January

1808 ......... Christian Brothers founded by Edmund Rice at Waterford

1817 ...... Epidemic of Typhus cause over 50,000 Irish deaths

1820 ....... Between 1820 and 1945, 4.5 million Irishmen, women and children emigrated to the USA

1826 ....... Currency Act Permits assimilation of Irish Currency with Britain.

1828 ........ Daniel O’ Connell elected M .P. for Clare

1838 ........ Fr Matthew establishes Total Abstinence Movement

1845/47 .... The great Irish Famine created a major decline in population from 8 million in 1841 to 6.6 million in 1851.Over 1million died during the Famine years  and a further million emigrated.

By 1911 Ireland’s population declined to 4.4 million

1849 ......... Queens Colleges opened at Belfast, Cork and Galway

1858 ........ Irish Republican Brotherhood founded by James Stephens

1859 ......... First edition of Irish Times newspaper

1866 ......... Archbishop Cullen becomes first   Irishman to be ordained a Cardinal

1918 ....... M V Leinster sunk by German submarine- over 500 drowned.                      

Countess Markievioz, Sinn Fein M. P. First woman elected to House of Commons.

Sinn Fein win Irish general electon

1919 ..... War of Independence commences.  Sinn Fein creates Dail Eireann and adopts provisional constitution.

Eamonn De Valera elected president of Sinn Fein and Dail decrees that all volunteers must swear allegiance to Irish Republic Army (I.R.A)

1920 ... Notorious British Black and Tans make their entry to Ireland

1921 ..... Anglo Irish Treaty signed on the 6th December in London decrees six northern counties remain under British rule.

1922 ... Treaty Approved by Dáil and Civil War begins.

Michael Collinsshot dead at Beal na  Blath,Crookstown,Co.Cork on the 22nd August.

1923 ..... Civil War Ends

1937 .......... New Irish Constitution takes effect

1938 ......... Douglas Hyde becomes first President of  Eire on the 25th June

1945 ...... Sean T. O’ Kelly elected President on the 16th June

1949 ..... Ireland becomes a republic on the 18th April

1955 ..... Ireland join the League of United Nations on the 14th December

1956 .... Ronnie Delaney wins Olympic Gold Medal at Melbourne in one mile event

1959 ..... Eamon De Valera suceeds Sean T.O’Kelly as President Of Ireland on the 17th June.

Sean Lemass becomes Taoiseach on the 23rd June in succession to Eamonn  De Valera

1960 .... Government Act establishes national broadcasting authority (Radio Eireann) to oversee a radio and television service for Ireland. 

Irish Army troops sent to Congo on the 27th July to assist UN troops

1961 .... Ireland applied for membership of  EEC on the 1st August. 

National Television Service launched on the 31st December

1962 ... RTE’s ‘Late Late Show inaugarted on the 6th July

1963 ...... President John F Kennedy visited Ireland

1964 ..... Irish army troops sent to Cyprus

1965 ..... Sean Lemass visits Terence O’Neill in Belfast

1966 ..... Nelson Pillar, O’Connell Street, Dublin, blown up in explosion.

18 year old catholic barman, Peter Ward, shot dead in Belfast on 26th June

1971 ...... On the 15th February, Ireland’s old  currency of pounds, shillings and pence changed to decimalisation.
