Brian Murphy of Cork: The Only Player to Win All Ireland titles in Hurling & Football

in Minor; Under 21 & Senior

Quietly and most effectively, Brian Murphy of Nemo Rangers and Cork fame, garnered a unique collection of ten All Ireland medals across the spectrum of inter county hurling and football grades. As a dual player extraordinary, his performances in the rebel red or black and green of his club, won many honours for his club and county in an era when ‘Man of the Match’ awards were a rare commodity.

In the Munster and All Ireland colleges games, Brian exhibited his skills at Colàiste Chríost Rí and in 1968 they won the prestigious Dr. Harty Cup in Munster and the All Ireland senior football colleges title with Brian a key figure. In the early 1970's the Nemo star was winning minor and under 21 All Ireland titles in hurling and football.

He made his Cork senior hurling debut against arch rivals Tipperary in the 1971/72 National Hurling League and he also was a member of the famous 3 in-a-row All Ireland champion team from 1976 to 1978. His dual ability as an inter county footballer took him on to the blistering Cork senior football team of 1973, which won the Sam Maguire and were caught off guard against a rampant Dublin team in the 1974 All Ireland senior football semi final.

With Nemo he won seven county senior football titles and a glorious four senior football All Ireland club titles in 1973; 1978 as captain; 1982 and 1984. His dedication to his club and county was tested beyond normal endurance, when as a garda he was stationed in Kilkenny City, right through the summit of his career. For many years after his inter county retirement in 1984, he continued his loyalty to his native Cork club.

The decision to hang up his boots came in 1987, but only when the silverware and awards bestowed had reached a rare high level that was the sole preserve of the truly gifted dual inter county stars and Brian Murphy was a real Cork star.
