Isles of Scilly Ferry's Final Season: A 49-Year Legacy (2026)

The Isles of Scilly, a remote and beloved archipelago off the coast of Cornwall, is bidding farewell to a cherished icon - the Scillonian III ferry. After nearly five decades of service, this veteran vessel is sailing into the sunset, leaving behind a legacy that goes far beyond its functional role.

A Lifeline and a Legend

For almost 50 years, the Scillonian III has been an essential link between the Isles of Scilly and the UK mainland. It has braved all weather conditions, carrying cargo and passengers with unwavering reliability. But it's not just a means of transport; it's an integral part of the islands' identity and a source of deep affection for locals and visitors alike.

"The Scillonian is more than just a ferry," says Dan Morris, an air traffic controller on St Mary's, the main island. "It's a beautiful, essential connection that feels almost poetic. It's the first glimpse of Scilly for many, and it leaves a lasting impression."

A Rich History

The Scillonian III is the latest in a long line of ships bearing the same name. The Isles of Scilly Steamship Group has operated a Scillonian ferry since 1926, with the current vessel being the third to carry the title. Over the years, these ships have become an integral part of the islands' culture and history.

"This ship is part of Penzance's furniture," says Stuart Reid, CEO of the Steamship Group. "It has a special place in people's hearts, and some have dedicated their entire working lives to it."

The Charm of the Old Girl

Stepping onto the Scillonian III is like stepping back in time. The bridge boasts an old-fashioned ship's telegraph and a wooden steering wheel, yet it also houses modern navigation equipment. Ship's master Andy Buchanan describes it as "beautifully analogue" and "ultra-reliable."

"I've been at the helm for over 20 years," he says, "and there's something special about this old girl. She may have had some technology updates, but she still feels timeless."

A Bumpy Ride, A Smooth Transition

While the Scillonian III's flat bottom provides a smooth entry into harbors, it also means a bumpier ride in rough weather. Despite this, passengers like Viv Robinson, a Blue Badge guide, prefer the ferry to other modes of transport. "You get to see the coastline and wildlife," she says. "It's part of the Scilly experience."

As the Scillonian III prepares for its final season, the Isles of Scilly are eagerly awaiting the arrival of its replacement, the Scillonian IV. Built in Vietnam, this new vessel will undertake an epic journey around Africa to reach its new home. Meanwhile, the future of the Scillonian III and its cargo-carrying counterpart, the Gry Maritha, remains uncertain, with both up for sale.

A New Chapter

The retirement of the Scillonian III marks the end of an era, but it also signals a new beginning. As the islands embrace the Scillonian IV, they continue a tradition of resilience and adaptation, ensuring that the vital link between Scilly and the mainland remains strong.

"It's a bittersweet moment," says Gail Dunkley, the ship's purser. "There's so much love for this ship, but we're also excited to see what the future holds."

As the Scillonian III sails off into the sunset, it leaves behind a legacy of connectivity, community, and a unique sense of place. It's a reminder that sometimes the most cherished things are the ones that connect us to our roots and our shared experiences.
